A Virginia driver improvement course (either online or in-classroom) does NOT fulfill the requirement for the 3 Exam Failures.
Below is information provided by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to assist you with finding the appropriate training for 3 Exam Failures. Click this link to take you to the DMV website.
Driver’s license applicants who fail the knowledge exam or road skills test three times must successfully complete the applicable knowledge or in-vehicle component of a driver education course before they can take the examination a fourth time. Classes taken at a driver improvement clinic do not meet this requirement.
FAILING THE KNOWLEDGE TEST
If you have failed the knowledge test three times and are age 18 or over, you must either:
– Retake the classroom component of driver education (consisting of 36 fifty-minute classroom sessions).
– Complete an 8-hour Driver’s Manual course, either in a classroom or online. This 8-hour course is based on the Virginia driver’s manual and is designed to better prepare individuals for the knowledge test. The online course must be completed through a DMV-licensed online driver training school. You can find a list of schools offering this course at Driver’s Manual Course Training Sites.
– NOTE: The completion date of the driver’s manual course must be after the date of your third knowledge test failure.
When you have successfully completed either the classroom component of driver education or the classroom or online version of the Driver’s Manual course and have provided DMV with your certificate of completion, you can retake the knowledge exam.
If you have failed the knowledge test three times and are under age 18, you must retake the classroom component of driver education. If you wish to take the Driver’s Manual course in a classroom or online, you must provide proof of having completed the driver education classroom component before you are allowed to enroll in the Driver’s Manual course.
NOTE: If you have failed the CDL knowledge test, you must complete the classroom component in person. An online version of the course is not available at this time.
FAILING THE ROAD SKILLS TEST
If you have failed the road test three times, you must re-take the behind-the-wheel component of driver education. This component consists of 14 fifty-minute periods of in-car instruction (7 periods of driving and 7 periods of observation, including the final road skills examination).
FIND A DRIVER TRAINING SCHOOL
To locate the driver training school that is closest to you, refer to Driver Training Schools (Three Exam Failures) by District.
Log into the website with your login and password to resume the course. Don’t worry, your progress will be saved and you can resume where you left off.
At the time of registration you can add our new audio read-along feature. You can even add the feature after you have already purchased your subscription.
The audio playback will allow you to hear the text spoken so you can listen to as well as read the course.
When you successfully pass the final exam you will receive email notification of your passing.
Next (within 24 hours of your successful passing of the final exam) we will transmit your course completion electronically to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. This is a contractual requirement of every licensed driver improvement clinic in Virginia.
Once we have notified the DMV we will generate your certificate of completion. You will then receive e-mail notification containing your free certificate of completion download (PDF). This document is considered the ORIGINAL certificate of completion and is accepted by all Virginia courts.
The DMV standardized certificate “Online Driver Improvement Clinic Certificate of Completion (DIC 552B)” is the only document that will be accepted by the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Courts as proof of completion of an online driver improvement clinic.
You have the option to purchase a printed certificate of completion to be mailed to you via USPS First Class mail or UPS Ground.
You will ALWAYS receive your “free certificate of completion download” regardless of whether or not you elect to have a certificate of completion mailed to you.
Printing the certificate: Print the certificate of completion on plain white, letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). Do not use any specialty paper such as resume paper.
It is the student’s responsibility to return/mail this certificate of completion to the proper entity (court, insurance company, DMV). We will only electronically notify the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles of your course completion.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you enter your date of birth incorrectly at the time of registration, your course completion information will not be posted to your driving record. Therefore, if you are DMV-directed, your clinic requirement will not be satisfied.
Yes! A recently enacted regulation now permits the court of jurisdiction to assign Safe Driving Points if you successfully complete a Court-ordered driver improvement clinic.
In order to earn Safe Driving Points, the court must provide you with an official notice that Safe Driving Points are to be assigned upon completion of this driver improvement clinic. The notice will specifically state that the Safe Driving Points are to be assigned. To ensure proper processing upon your course completion, you must upload positive proof of court notification at the time of registration and purchase of our course.
If you do not upload anything for the Court-ordered reason for attendance, then the website will default to “No Safe Driving Points assigned.”
